R.I.P. Egg Jacket (or How To Waste A Month)

Well, what can I say. I had such high hopes. Until I put it on last night. I do think this pattern really is best for children.

That's because the hood on the adult version (or, at least on mine), as happens when you size up, becomes extra huge and deep and not really useful. A big waste of beautiful yarn. It hangs halfway down my back. (and it was difficult to get a photo of my back!)

Then when I put the hood over my head. Laughter. Piercing, shrill laughter, followed by a lot of groaning. I look like the grim reaper in pink. I should have realized this when I saw the photo of the adult tomten in Opinionated Knitter. See how it's folded back? On me, not so cute.

Also, for some reason, whether it's my knitting or just the style or the stitch, it's looking more homemade than handmade to me. I feel like it's sloppy and that I wouldn't wear it. And to me, those are all signs I should call it quits.

I can't, in good conscience, keep knitting something I don't think I will wear. I'm a little depressed. But maybe this is the Sockapalooza voice yelling at me. Yeah, that's probably it.

Oh no! I'm sad for you, but you're right. There is no reason to keep knitting something that is not working.

Oh what a disappointment! Darn. But, there's some nice yarn that's available for a new project, right?

Could you salvage by just making a jacket? Perhaps find another collar rather than the hood? I'm with you though -- if I know I won't wear/use it, there's really not a good point to continue investing the time.

Sorry to hear about your frogging to come. The yarn is beautiful and I'm sure you will find the perfect thing for it. I like the idea about turning into a jacket...Perhaps the einstein jacket?

Oh, what a painful realization! I wonder if the jacket would look better after being blocked, though? (And with a smaller hood.)

If you decide to rip it, something like the Central Park Hoodie might be a good alternative. Still classic and neutral, but a bit more modern...

Oh no! All that work.
Unless you really want to re-use the yarn right away I think you should put the whole project aside for a few months. Forget it's there. Then get it out when the weather starts to get a bit cooler and re-assess. You might see a way to rescue it - rip back the hood and change to a collar for example. Or you might feel exactly the same of course, but no harm will have been done in the meantime.

Oh, it's so tought to realize you've used up all your knititng time on something that isn't going to work. The yarn is beautiful, though, and better to stop now thant try to rip it out after years of it sitting in the closet. Good luck!

What a bummer! That is some prety yarn though.

O H NO say it isn't so!!!! And yet another reason I don't knit sweaters for myself the fear of the frog (plus I don't wear sweaters) Got to find more babies to knit for, LOL

Nertz. I'm sorry to hear that it's headed for the frog pond, but yes, no sense continuing if you already know it will not be worn. Maybe it could be used to make a sweater for one of the babes? And a hat, too?
